History of Wedding Favors
Many years ago, some Europeans bestowed upon their
departing wedding guests small boxes of sugared treats. Because the petite boxes were usually made of precious gold or fragile porcelain and sugar was
expensive, only the wealthy could afford to not send off their wedding guests empty-handed. The act of giving away mementos of the wedding day has grown in
popularity and creativity and is no longer a practice of the wealthy.
The sugar-coated almond, affectionately known as the Jordan almond, is a popular wedding favor. The
perennial sugar-coated almond, symbolizing both the sweet (sugar) and bitter (almond) aspects of marriage, made its debut as Italian wedding favors. Presented in
five's, the sugared candies represent love, happiness, wealth, fertility, and longevity. Italians refer to a handful of these petite candies as confetti. In
France, similar candies are called dragees. The confetti is then usually packaged in wonderfully designed confetti ribbon made to look like flowers,
leaves or butterflies. When packaged in a small, ornate box they are called Bonboniere by the French.
